What we Attended: Babies and Books 10:30
Thoughts:
The program was pretty great. First of all, there were about 20 babies under 24months old. The woman running this had to think on her feet, because our group was much larger than in the past. She moved us to the community room.
This program started off with several songs that had hand motions and a lyrics sheet. One of these songs was "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" during which the librarian came around and touched each child with a star wand. Then she read a board book. The librarian apologized about the book she was reading, because many of the board books were gone (because they had been checked out by patrons). Then we moved into the shaker songs where children got to use egg shakers and moved them in different directions as the songs guided them. Then things got really exciting as the next songs were bubble songs. The librarian moved a bubble machine around as we sang and the kids either tried to catch or chase bubbles. Finally it was free play.
This free play was really nice because since the kids were relatively close in age, you didn't have to be as worried that your little one might get hurt. We did however have to worry about overzealous Z playing with the outlet on the floor, but all of the parents, caregivers, and the librarian watched out for this and kept the kids safe. This free play included a four way tunnel (clearly the favorite item), several board books in bins, balls, and an assortment of blocks.
Children's Department: First of all be careful, you might trip over something as you admire the spectacular decorations that adorn this fantasy wonderland. There are pirates, pterodactyls, hungry caterpillars, and all sorts of other amazing sculptures. One thing to note was my husband did almost run into one of these displays with his head, so be again be cautious.
As for the play areas there are a few separate spaces. There's a train table with a large activity cube. The board books are located in bins on a low shelf we had a hard time finding them, probably because as the librarian said many were checked out.
In addition to this area, on the other end there was a small table with a large checkers board set out clearly meant for older kids.
Programs and other Things:
One unique thing this library does in Vacation or Staycation kits. If you give the library a week's notice and your destination or need for a Staycation kit a week in advance they'll put together a custom kit for you. It might include books, audiobooks, music, or movies. This sounds like an AWESOME item.
Weekly they have the following programs:
Monday: 6:45 Mightly Math (math concepts for toddlers and preschoolers)
Tuesday :930 or 10:30 Babies and Books (0-24months storytime)
Wednesday: 9:30 or 10:30 Storytime for 2's (2 year old storytime)
Thursday:9:30 Preschool Storytime (ages 3-6) This storytime says without a caregiver which might be interesting.
Friday: 6:45 Dance Party (Toddler/Preschool) Dance party with a caregiver
Saturday 10:00am Family Storytime (everyone) A great time for the whole family.
