Thoughts:
One thing to note is this location has street parking only so bring a few quarters. Each one will get you half an hour, so it's pretty reasonable. I was about 10 minutes early and had no problem finding a place to park.
First thing you will notice is that this library is very new. Founded in 2013, this is a very intimate space that has a cafe vibe. This children's area was closed due to some sort of construction or leak issue, so we were in a back area. At any rate, Millvale has a really unique setup and was a refreshing change.
One thing that I noticed about this story time was that there was a lot more freedom. The program didn't appear to be a "lapsit" type of program. Some kids were on laps but many were sitting near the librarian, wandering, playing quietly with library toys, and practicing being an escape artist at different intervals. Parents seemed to be very relaxed about this, which is good for kids who need more movement. There were about 8 kids at this program ranging from a few weeks old (she had an older sibling) to three or four year olds. The program description says it is for any child under five. This blending of ages was nice because some kids were very proficient with the routine which allowed younger children to have models to follow. The program had some songs, shaker time, a story, and a bubble maker time.
After the program, mini maker time occurred. Children were encourage to decorate Popsicle cut outs that were made out of colorful corrugated cardboard which gave it a ridged texture. Children could use crayons, buttons, feathers, pom poms, and other items. My child had no interest in this project (besides eating the materials), but many kids did complete this project at their own leisure.
Since we weren't going to do the art project we played with other kids with the plastic food, train table, and magna-tiles (magnetic blocks that connect together). The snack was small bites of Rice Krispie treats. It is located on the back of the circulation desk, if you're not sure of where it is. Many kids were also eating treats that they brought from home as they played. At about 11:30 most of the original kids were fading fast. We also were feeling sleepy so we didn't get to stay for open play, but I'm imagining it would have been similar materials to what we were playing with.
Millvale is a fun library with a great cafe atmosphere!
